How to Install Stainless Steel Pipe and Tube — Mirror-Polished ASTM A312 TP316L / A269 310S 304 316

Whether you are working with ASTM A312 TP316L seamless pipe or ASTM A269 precision tube, the mirror-polished or BA bright-annealed surface dictates one core principle: protecting surface integrity is as important as achieving joint tightness. Once the polished layer is scratched or weld-oxidized, its corrosion resistance and cleanliness advantages are compromised.

Before Installation: Inspection and Storage

Verify the material certificate—confirm low carbon content (C ≤ 0.03%) for 316L and distinguish 304 from 304L. Keep mirror-polished tube wrapped in protective sleeving and store in a dry indoor area, away from direct contact with carbon steel (to prevent iron contamination and pitting). Use nylon slings for lifting; never bind with wire rope.

Cutting and Beveling: Precision Matters

With tolerances of only 0–0.05 mm, roundness and straightness are excellent. Use a dedicated tube cutter or band saw. Do not use an abrasive wheel—heat damages the mirror finish and creates burrs. Deburr with a dedicated reamer and clean with a stainless-steel brush. For welding, bevel at 30°–37.5° with a 1–1.5 mm root face, and clean the bevel with acetone until oil-free.

Connection Methods

Welding (butt or socket): 316L is designed for improved weldability and reduced sensitization risk. Argon backing gas is mandatory; otherwise, internal oxidation destroys cleanliness. Use low heat input, multi-pass welding, and keep interpass temperature below 150°C. After welding, pickle and passivate the weld and heat-affected zone to restore the chromium oxide film.

Press-fit (for small-diameter BA tube): This is the most surface-friendly method—no heat damage. Cut, deburr, mark insertion depth, then press once with the dedicated pressing tool. Do not rotate or pull the fitting after pressing. Inspect the press mark for uniformity. The excellent roundness of precision tube suits this method well.

Threaded connections: Only for low-pressure, non-critical services. Mirror-polished tube is difficult to thread and easily damaged. If unavoidable, apply food-grade/chemical-resistant sealant and prevent debris from entering the tube.

Surface Protection During Installation

Wrap adjacent mirror-polished areas with heat-resistant tape or wet cloth during welding or pressing to prevent spatter and heat transfer. Never strike an arc or attach the ground clamp directly on the tube surface. After installation, remove protective film and wipe fingerprints with a neutral cleaner—never chlorine-containing cleaners (316L is more resistant than 304, but concentrated chlorides can still cause stress corrosion cracking).

Post-Installation: Pressure Test and Flushing

Chloride content in hydrotest water should be ≤ 50 ppm. Drain and dry immediately after testing. For clean gas or high-purity media, flush with pure water or nitrogen until conductivity/particle limits are met. Inspect every pressed or welded joint during testing—weld areas on mirror-polished tube deserve particular attention for lack of fusion or oxidation color.
